Hurt - Nine Inch Nails/Johnny Cash Cover

General Comment NIN wrote the song, but Cash gave it meaning. There was an error. So, so true Flagged doyouwash on January 18, VERY true,,, Flagged music1pwns on June 15, That is stupid, you dont know NOTHING about NIN or Trent. The song already had it's TRUE meaning, cause Trent wrote it, with his feelings. Johnny gave it ANOTHER meaning. Flagged DassJennir on May 23, I agree with Drannon.

Also DassJennir it is not nothing it is anything. I listened to both of the versions but I do like Cash's better. Flagged collin on October 14, Can you elaborate on how Cash gave it meaning? The lyrics are the same. He just covered it with a sound that is more pleasing to the general population. The original song conveyed a lot of meaning to people like me who were struck by their first bout of depression in adolescence and turned towards the darker thoughts that Trent Reznor captures so well, particularly in The Downward Spiral.

Sounds like it gives meaning to another crowd as more of the American can probably relate to Johnny Cash better than they can relate to Trent. So how exactly does it give more meaning to others anyhow? Really am just curious? Was a very cool cover, but I'm still more a fan of the original as it gives more meaning to me. Flag mike on June 30, I think Cash's version has "meaning" to more because more people are aware of his personal issues, and the song strongly follows his personal life.

The manner in which it is sung also resonates more with the general populace. I don't it makes it any better or worse, just appeals to different tastes and people relate more to a particular tone, tempo etc. Flag sokorny on January 28, General Comment When Trent heard Johnny Cash's cover he said "It's his song now" That sums it up. Cash has a way of doing that.

The world lost a beautiful legend when Cash died.

I can't see this video without crying. No Replies Log in to reply.

General Comment Well, Johnny Cash did this song very well. If you look back at his life, this song kind of sums it up. Johnny made a change in life somewhere a long the road. But when he was doing music from state prison, he really did have an "empire of dirt". The man was old when he made his version of the song and he meant every lyrics of this song even though Trent came up with it first.

General Comment one of the best covers of all time. He owns this song. His version is excellent. For me, it takes an older, more experienced, married man with years of wisdom to give this song the feeling it requires. Cash gives it depth. The pain is obvious in his voice, much like Cohen's Hallelujah.

Flag ManofSteel on November 21, General Comment Trent Reznor wrote it so remember that he is and always will be an awesome artist.

Johnny Cash however gave it the sound of wisdom, and trust me i dont think anyone could of gave it more than Mr. General Comment When you watch the film clip, acting as a montage for Cash's illustrious career, it puts the song and the meaning he wants to put forth into perspective.

As he reflects on his magnificent career, he has aspects of his life and career that he knows weren't as rosy as they could have been and he knows that whatever bridges he crossed and whoever he upset in any way, he can't get that back. As a result, he regrets that experience. On the flip side, when he says 'What have I become? The fact he made this song in such a short amount of time, was just incredible. Right before his death, too.

General Comment I'll have to agree with everyone else on this one. Johnny Cash took this song and completely made it his own. I love it immensely. General Comment Whether you like Johnny Cash or NIN, this is still an example of what a cover should be.

He finds something new and personal to say with it. The first time I heard this, I cried. Johnny Cash puts so much raw pain and honesty into this song, it is heartbreaking. General Comment Nine Inch Nails wrote this song about drugs. Cash turned it into a kinda curtain call for himself. No they didn't write this song about drugs idiot. It was written by Trent to help him get over a breakup. It isn't about drugs it's about a break up. Flag pwned55 on October 18, I wrote some words and music in my bedroom as a way of staying sane, about a bleak and desperate place I was in, totally isolated and alone.

It's strange how information can get so mixed up. Flag andreea26 on November 26, General Comment Well, I don't know if anyone else can relate but the song has connections to someone who has BPD or Borderline Personality Disorder.

He mentions in the song of self mutilation, "I hurt myself today, to see if I still feel, I focus on the pain, the only thing that's real, the needle tears a hole, the old familiar sting.

She said the only thing that was real was the pain she felt when she hurt herself.

People with this disorder also have problems with being honest and they have problems with paying attention. The girl I know said she had constant thoughts running through her mind of so many different things that it became confusing. These people also tend to hurt people emotionally and let them down when they're needed. But hey, I'm just an ex-psychology major, what do I know, right? I don't actually know a lot about JC's life so I'm not sure if he or someone in his life had BPD.

Like your x-gf, my wife has it, so I totally got everything you said. Hopefully you're still in the field since you have some keen insights. Flag thinknrethink on July 11, Log in now to add this track to your mixtape!
