Welcome to the Ars OpenForum. Posting Guidelines Contact Moderators. Stop Blackberry from making calls. Thu Jul 24, Is there any way to stop my Blackberry from making Emergency calls when locked?

It has called twice in the last month and I'm worried that it might cause delays for someone who actually has an emergency.

Right now I have the choice of not locking it and it phantom calls a few random people or locking it and it calls once per month. I'm using the Curve model.

Any strategies to avoid this would be appreciated. You could put it into standby by holding mute, I find it hard to get mine out of that on accident. Yeah, I started using standby rather than lock. Thu Jul 24, 2: I have a rubber case for it. I'm not Batman though, so I don't have one of those stupid belt based ones that North Americans seem to go ga ga for. I'll give the standby a shot. Now to find the mute button How exactly are you accidentally dialing ?

Those rubber skins are just that - skins. They're just to protect the shiny exterior for people who refuse to use a holster. The only sure fire way to avoid accidental keypress is a real holster. Anything that doesn't cover the trackball which is probably what's making the emergency calls is purely cosmetic.

With the BB, pressing the trackball once brings up the unlock screen, and Emergency Call is the second option. Even with the confirmation box it's very easy for it to get pressed.

Holsters keep the device looking better over the long run than tossing it in a pocket or a bag. I've got dozens of devices here to prove it. Ones kept in the holster look nearly new, while those that were doomed to live in a pocket or back look like they're 5 or 6 years old.

I used to use one when I was much younger as it was just the right size for a bus pass. I don't know anybody that wears their holster on the back of their belt, so sitting on it is pretty much impossible. As for banging off of everything, how do your pockets fair any better if a 2 inch protrusion from your waist does that? If you think about it, a wallet is in essence a holster for your money and ID. Just no belt clip, although a chain that attached to your belt is something I've seen before.

Again, I have to mention that they do make holsters without clips, so you can still make your pocket all lumpy if you want. Oh, and the Batman excuse is tired.

As for the standby key, try pressing the mute button for a couple of seconds. That may help, although if you've got it in your pocket naked it's just as likely something will hit that button as well and take it out of standby. I guess they assume panicking people won't remember how to unlock their phone. I'm guessing that means with enough moving around in his pocket, he occasionally hits the right buttons for a call.

With the older wheel models, you could do it since the stock holsters didn't cover the wheel.

Technically I suppose if you were paired with a bluetooth device capable of initiating a call it would work. You have made my life better. I didn't know I could do that. My Pearl also makes calls occasionally.

Not every month, but it's made 3 so far this year, despite the fact that I don't keep anything in my pocket with it. Hopefully I'll have better luck with this standby mode.

Feb 12, Posts: I'll readily agree with you on this point. I hate having a moderately big, heavy phone bouncing around in my pocket. Sep 22, Posts: In that case, you might be better calling elsewhere than to The "authorities" as in police and other emergency services do not have to respond to you. The fact that they do is just out of their goodwill.

There was actually a case in supreme court in this regard I would quote it if I remembered, but not ATM. They do not have to respond or send assistance. Makes ya feel great Good luck getting that problem fixed on your phone, I know I wouldn't be happy to see the 5-O waiting for me when I get home.

Do you get deducted airtime when calling ? I wonder if they transfer calls for free. Because you're not Batman and a holster makes you look like a tool. It also bangs off everything. You end up sitting on it when you sit down.

Phones are small, they fit in a pocket really well.

I don't see anyone getting a holster for their keys or their wallet. That's the essence of the holster hate. Holsters are a very American thing. Not so much used in Asia. Back to the original topic though.
